CHAPTER 13
Astrid jerked awake. Where was this and why was her head resting against a bed? Of course, the astringent smell and the constant beeping, she was still at Rafe’s bedside. What had woken her? Was it the nurses again? Every time she’d dozed off they had come in to check on him. They had been kind though, bringing her cups of sweet tea and a rather dry sandwich which she’d wolfed down. A hand touched her hair and she sat up and blinked owlishly.
“What time is it? Was I asleep for long?” Rafe murmured, hoarse and drowsy.
She stood and stretched to ease the stiffness in her body then leaned over to examine him. His eyes were clear and his colour much better. His rate of recovery was astonishing, even the nurses had commented on how quickly his wounds were healing.
“It’s gone two in the afternoon, you have been asleep for over nine hours.”
“Nine hours? That’s impossible, I only just went to sleep.”
He sat up and winced then pushed back the bedclothes. Now what was he up to?
“Rafe, you must lie down, would you like something hot to drink?”
“I feel fine, what do they say?”
“They are pleased, everything is stable and your wounds have already started to heal. Now, coffee or tea…Rafe! What on earth are you doing? Stop! Get back into bed, oh my goodness!”
An alarm sounded from the machine in the corner as Rafe ripped off the adhesive pads and wires stuck to his chest. Then he squeezed his eyes shut, took a deep breath and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Astrid blinked and turned her back, he was stark naked. A nurse burst through the door.
“Commander, what do you think you’re doing? Back to bed this instant.” she said.
“No, I can’t do that madam, I need my clothes, any clothes. I have to get back now. There’s a crisis, haven’t you heard? Astrid, you can turn around again, I’m quite decent.”
“Commander, may I remind you that you came in with two bullet wounds to your chest and a bullet graze to your temple only fourteen hours ago. You lost a lot of blood and almost checked out on us on the operating table, you were incredibly lucky. If you think I’m going to allow you to-”
Astrid turned round as Rafe pulled the blankets around himself. The nurse stopped trying to wrestle him back into bed as he gripped her hand gently and said;
“I know, I know how lucky I was and I am infinitely grateful but we have an emergency, the news must have filtered through by now. I have to get back, I must get back. Look, Astrid’s blood seems to have speeded up my healing and we have a paramedic at our headquarters. Please, please…I have to go. If you need anything signed, Astrid can do it. Now please, get me some clothes or I’ll use this sheet as a bloody toga.”
He got his own way of course; she had a feeling he usually did once he made up his mind.
